Samurai Shodown is a weapons-based 2D fighting game that broke new ground in 1993. Set in 18th-century Japan, battles are decided by blades: katanas, kodachis, claws, and a massive anchor wielded by the giant Earthquake. You choose from a roster of warriors, including the wolf companion Nakoruru and the undead swordsman Gen-an. Key innovations include a POW meter that fills with damage to unleash super slashes, the ability to knock weapons from opponents' hands forcing fisticuffs, and a dynamic camera that zooms in on the action.
Sega Mega CD
The Sega CD port retains the original intro with speech and all cinematics . The dynamic zooming camera is missing, but unlike the SNES version (always zoomed out), the camera is locked in the "zoomed-in" view, providing larger, detailed characters . The missing character Earthquake is absent due to hardware limitations—the Sega CD's maximum sprite size is 32x32 pixels, while his sprite runs 16x512 pixels . Backgrounds are less compressed than the Genesis version . Music is a direct arcade-perfect CD stream, though voice samples suffer from low-frequency sampling . The game uses a color compression scheme to display over 128 on-screen colors (versus Genesis 64) .
