Blade

PlayStation

Blade is a 3D action-adventure game where players control the half-man, half-vampire vampire hunter as he battles through 24 gothic locations to save humanity from the vampire menace. With assistance from mentor Abraham Whistler, Blade ventures through warehouses, sewers, museums, city streets, and nightclubs fighting vampires, zombies, familiars, and creatures of the night. Armed with his trademark Japanese sword, handguns, shotguns, machine pistols, and a multi-launcher equipped with silver glaives and UV grenades, players employ martial arts and strategic firearm ammunition—standard, explosive, or silver rounds each effective against different enemies.

Released by Activision in November 2000 and developed by HammerHead, Blade received mixed to negative reviews with a Metacritic score of 51. Critics heavily criticized the wonky camera angles, slow and frustrating controls, and repetitive gameplay that failed to capture the spirit of the film. The graphics, while acceptable for early PS1 action games, appeared dated even at release. IGN's David Smith called it "Much too little much too late," while GamePro stated the game "adequately describes" what you get when you remove the 'kick' from the Blade character. Despite the poor reception, some fans discovered depth in its varied weapons, headshot system, and multiple endings.
