Crash Bandicoot

PlayStation

Crash Bandicoot is a platform game developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation in 1996. The player controls Crash, a genetically enhanced bandicoot created by Doctor Neo Cortex. The story follows Crash as he aims to foil Cortex's plans for world domination and rescue his girlfriend Tawna. The game is played from a third-person perspective where the camera trails behind Crash, though some levels feature side-scrolling views. Crash's abilities include jumping on enemies and performing a spinning attack. Crates contain Wumpa Fruit, which grant an extra life if 100 are collected, and Aku Aku masks that protect from hazards. The game features 32 levels across three islands, with hidden areas unlocked by collecting gems.

Released in North America on September 9, 1996, and in Europe on November 8, 1996, Crash Bandicoot became one of the best-selling PlayStation games with over 6 million units sold. The game received positive reviews, with critics praising its graphics, presentation, audio, and title character. Naughty Dog pushed the PlayStation's hardware to its limits, dedicating over a third of the polygon budget to rendering Crash alone, making him one of the most detailed characters of the era. The team hacked the console's code libraries to improve loading times. However, critics pointed out the game's linearity and lack of innovation compared to Super Mario 64. The save system, requiring bonus stages to save progress, and its challenging difficulty were also criticized. Despite these flaws, Crash Bandicoot established Naughty Dog's reputation and launched one of gaming's most iconic franchises.
