Arc the Lad

PlayStation

Arc the Lad is a tactical role-playing game developed by G-Craft and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. The story begins when a young girl named Kukuru, a member of the Sacred Clan, is tricked into extinguishing the Flame Cion, releasing an ancient demon called the Ark Ghoul. At the same time, a boy named Arc begins his quest to find his father, who disappeared ten years earlier. The two meet and unite to stop the evil that has been unleashed. The gameplay blends traditional and strategy-based RPG elements, with battles taking place on grid-based fields where characters can move and attack. Unlike many tactical RPGs, the game is not isometric and features smaller battlefields with fewer characters. Outside of battle, players navigate a world map by selecting locations, with events and battles triggering as the story unfolds. Players can save their data to transfer characters and items to the sequel Arc the Lad II.

PlayStation

Released exclusively in Japan on June 30, 1995, Arc the Lad was the best-selling Japanese PlayStation game of that year, with over one million copies sold. The game was never released individually outside Japan, but was later included in the North American Arc the Lad Collection in 2002. The game was originally conceived as a single large title but was split into two parts due to development issues, with the first game taking about 10-15 hours to complete. Critics praised the efficient, accessible battle system and witty dialogue, but noted the lack of depth and the rushed ending that served primarily as a setup for the sequel. The game received a score of 31/40 from Famitsu magazine. Despite its short length, Arc the Lad is remembered as a charming and important prologue to one of PlayStation's most beloved RPG series.
