Destruction Derby

PlayStation

Destruction Derby is a vehicular combat racing game based on demolition derby, developed by Reflections Interactive and published by Psygnosis in 1995 . You choose from three vehicles, each with different handling characteristics. Collisions affect car controls, limiting steering and maximum speed, while frontal impacts risk radiator damage causing the engine to overheat and stop . Four game modes are available: Destruction Derby awards points for destroying cars in The Bowl arena; Stock Car Racing focuses on finishing first; Wreckin' Racing combines both; Time Trial is a solo attack mode . The damage system tracks real-time wear on four body sections, turning from green to black as damage accumulates . Multiplayer supports up to eight players via PlayStation Link Cable .

PlayStation

Released in Europe on October 20, 1995 and in North America on November 16, 1995 . The PlayStation version features system link play for two players using the PlayStation Link Cable, though eight-player support was planned but not implemented . The game engine supports up to twenty cars on screen simultaneously, unmatched by any console racing game except Daytona USA . A single wire-frame model, differentiated by texture maps, is used for every vehicle . The game includes exclusive cheats such as MONKEY (unlocks a monkey running around the track worth points) and CREDITZ! (displays animated credits) . The game achieved high popularity and was later added to PlayStation's Platinum Range/Greatest Hits, becoming one of the first games to achieve platinum sales . Critics praised the graphics, damage system, and physics, calling it "a winner in every capacity" .
