Terra Cresta II is a vertically scrolling shoot-'em-up and the third installment in Nichibutsu's Cresta series, following Moon Cresta (1980) and Terra Cresta (1985). The Mandler army has returned, threatening to destroy all of humanity, and you must pilot a fighter craft to stop them. Unlike its arcade predecessors, this sequel was developed exclusively for home console and never received an arcade release. The core gameplay revolves around collecting numbered modules that attach to your ship, each providing unique weapons. When all five modules are assembled, your ship transforms into a fiery phoenix, granting temporary invincibility and omnidirectional attacks. You can also deploy collected modules into a formation around your ship, expanding shot coverage. Before starting, you can customize the formation's layout and firing directions.

Released exclusively in Japan on November 27, 1992, on HuCard, Terra Cresta II features detailed multi-layered backgrounds and a catchy chiptune soundtrack by Akihiro Akamatsu and Sachiko Oita. The game includes Normal campaign plus 2-Minute and 5-Minute Caravan-style score attack modes. A Sound Mode lets you listen to the music freely. Critical reception was mixed but leaned positive. Famitsu scored 21/40. Western import reviewers, however, praised the smooth pacing, imaginative boss designs, and deep weapon system, calling it one of the best shooters on the PC Engine. Criticism targeted occasional slowdown, the harsh penalty of losing all power-ups upon death, and difficulty considered low by hardcore standards. While not reaching the legendary status of Gunhed or Gate of Thunder, Terra Cresta II remains a solid, enjoyable shooter.
