Parodius Da! is a horizontally scrolling shoot-'em-up by Konami, parodying Gradius and TwinBee. You choose from four characters: Vic Viper (Gradius weapons), Octopus (Salamander config), TwinBee (rocket punch), and Pentarou the penguin (torpedoes). Gameplay follows the Gradius power meter but adds TwinBee bell power-ups (bombs, invincibility). Stages parody classical music, with enemies like the moai-spitting Yoshiko.
PC Engine
Released in Japan on February 21, 1992 on HuCard. Technically, this port mostly matches arcade quality, though it falls short in two areas: the HuCard provides compressed audio compared to CD-ROM versions, and the smaller screen resolution forces vertical scrolling to fit the entire playing field. Performance is a major improvement over the NES port—minimal slowdown and negligible sprite flicker, even during intense action. Arcade voice samples return but are heavily compressed. Two arcade stages (Moai battleship, ice cavern) are missing, replaced by a new exclusive "Special" score attack mode accessible from the title screen. A critical control improvement: special weapons are activated by double-tapping the shoot button, eliminating accidental misfires. The Vegas dancer's hip-shake animation is intact—uncensored compared to the NES version. Contemporary reception is very positive, with critics calling it "finally the version that gets it right" and recommending it as the definitive 8/16-bit console port. The game uses the standard PC Engine controller with two buttons (Shoot and Power Meter). A password system is not included. The HuCard is relatively rare and sought-after by collectors. The soundtrack, while compressed, retains Konami's signature quality.
