Dragon Spirit is a vertical-scrolling shoot-em-up originally released in arcades by Namco in 1987. You control Amul, a warrior who transforms into a powerful dragon to rescue Princess Alicia from the serpent demon Zawell. Gameplay follows the Xevious formula: fire projectiles at airborne enemies while dropping bombs on ground targets. Power-ups appear from eggs on the ground: blue orbs grant an extra dragon head for additional firepower, while orange orbs strengthen your shots. Amul can take two hits before dying, with a life bar visible on screen. The arcade game features nine stages through rivers, volcanoes, glaciers, and jungles, each ending with a large boss.
PC Engine / TurboGrafx-16
Released on December 16, 1988 by Namco on HuCard in Japan, and in December 1989 in North America . The PC Engine version is highly regarded for retaining most of the arcade's graphics and sound quality, often described as a near-arcade perfect port . It features only eight stages instead of nine, missing two levels from the arcade original . A notable addition is a hidden mode that compresses the display to better mimic the arcade's vertical aspect ratio . The difficulty is significantly reduced compared to the arcade version, making it more accessible and enjoyable for home play; Japanese reviewers rate arcade difficulty as "10" and this version as "5" . The soundtrack is praised as excellent for the PC Engine hardware. The game was re-released on the Wii Virtual Console in 2007 .
