Released in March 1988 in Japan by Hudson Soft, this conversion was initially split across two HuCard cartridges—R-Type I and R-Type II—due to memory constraints limiting each card to four stages. North American TurboGrafx-16 owners received the complete eight-stage experience on a single cartridge in November 1989. The conversion features impressive technical achievement with sprite work and animation approaching arcade accuracy, earning a prestigious 34-point Famitsu score. Graphics showcase vibrant colors and detailed alien designs with minimal compromise. The distinctive vertical scrolling "pan and scan" limitation means the bottom screen portion reserves space for the score and Wave Beam meter, restricting full-screen visibility. Occasional sprite flicker appears during intense sequences. Despite these hardware concessions, the PC Engine version stands as one of gaming's finest arcade conversions and arguably the greatest home version of R-Type ever created.
