Duke Nukem 3D is a first-person shooter developed by 3D Realms and a sequel to the platform games Duke Nukem and Duke Nukem II. You play as Duke Nukem, a muscle-bound, wisecracking action hero fighting to save Earth from an alien invasion in futuristic Los Angeles. Alongside Doom, this game popularized the FPS genre, trading gothic horror for cheesy B-movie satire. The Build engine features destructible environments including pool tables, light switches, collapsing buildings, and toilets that can be flushed for health. The arsenal includes pistols, shotguns, and shrink rays. The game originally shipped with three episodes spanning 28 levels.
Nintendo 64
Released for Nintendo 64 on November 16, 1997, Duke Nukem 64 was ported by Eurocom. All sexual content was removed: strippers and hookers were cut, and the Red Light District was renamed Gun Crazy. Violence and gore remained intact. The game includes all Atomic Edition levels plus new secret areas like Duke Burger, presented as a single campaign. Weapons were overhauled: the shotgun fires explosive shells, dual SMGs replace the chaingun, and a plasma cannon is added. The final boss Cycloid Emperor is rendered in full 3D polygons. There is no in-game music except the title screen. The port supports four-player split-screen deathmatch and two-player co-op with Rumble Pak. Despite heavy censorship, many consider it the best console port.
