Puyo Puyo Sun 64

Nintendo 64

Puyo Puyo Sun 64 is a falling-block puzzle game developed and published by Compile exclusively for the Nintendo 64, released only in Japan on October 30, 1997. It is the third mainline entry in the Puyo Puyo series, with "Sun" being a pun on "san" meaning three. The story follows Arle Nadja as she attempts to stop the Dark Prince, who has enlarged the sun to become more popular. The core gameplay involves matching falling "puyos" into groups of four of the same color to clear them and send garbage blocks to the opponent. The new mechanic is the "Sun Puyo," a special block used to unleash powerful attacks, though it can be turned off. Players choose from 16 characters, each with animated story sequences and taunts. Modes include Story, Puzzle, Tournament (up to 16 players in elimination), and standard two-player versus. Supports Rumble Pak.

Released exclusively in Japan, Puyo Puyo Sun 64 received positive reviews. Critics praised the addictive, easy-to-learn gameplay and the strategic depth of chaining, calling it a "blast to play." The soundtrack was noted for its Japanese folk-fusion style. However, graphics were criticized as simple and 16-bit-like, far below N64's potential, with flat 2D sprites. One publication gave it 80%, calling it "one of the finest competitive puzzlers" on the system. User reviews praised the high-speed action and nostalgic Compile-era charm. The Sun Puyo mechanic could feel unbalanced, but options allow disabling it. The game never received an official Western release, requiring Japanese menu navigation, but remains a cult favorite. For N64 collectors, Puyo Puyo Sun 64 offers classic, addictive gameplay that holds up remarkably well.
