The Flintstones: The Surprise at Dinosaur Peak! is a platform game developed by Sol Corporation and published by Taito, serving as the sequel to 1991's The Rescue of Dino & Hoppy . When Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm go missing, Fred and Barney find them at the foot of Dinosaur Peak. Before they can reach the children, the volcano erupts, cutting them off . The Great Gazoo appears and explains a legend about a Fire Dinosaur living in the volcano, suggesting Fred and Barney find him to stop the eruption . The Pterodactyls agree to fly them up the mountain in exchange for five gemstones. The core innovation is the ability to swap instantly between Fred and Barney using the Select button . Fred attacks with a club that can be charged for powerful swings and can grab ledges to pull himself up. Barney attacks from a distance with a slingshot and can climb ropes and poles . Ten stages include standard platforming, plus surfing and aerial shooter segments . Two sports minigames (ice hockey and basketball) are also included .
NES
Released in North America in late 1993 as one of the final NES titles, never released in Japan . It features detailed 8-bit graphics that push the hardware and digitized voice samples . Critical reception is highly positive: retro reviewers call it "one of the most underrated titles on the entire platform" and note that everything wrong with the first game has been cleaned up, with improved collision detection and satisfying combat . However, the game suffers from an extreme difficulty spike right before the final boss involving a chasing wheel through narrow corridors that many find frustrating . Despite this, it is widely praised as one of the best NES platformers released late in the system's life .
