Kirby's Adventure is a side-scrolling platformer by HAL Laboratory and Nintendo. It is the second Kirby game and first for a home console. Kirby travels across Dream Land to retrieve the seven broken pieces of the Star Rod, stolen by King Dedede. The game introduces Copy Ability: by inhaling enemies, Kirby steals their powers, gaining over twenty abilities including Fire, Sword, Cutter, Hammer, and Ice. Kirby can also hover infinitely, slide tackle, run, and swim. The game spans eight worlds including Vegetable Valley and Rainbow Resort, each with multiple stages and hidden switches. A battery-backed save system allows progress retention.

NES

Released in March 1993 in Japan, May 1993 in North America, Kirby's Adventure was one of the final major NES titles. The cartridge uses 512 KB PRG-ROM and 256 KB CHR-ROM with MMC3 mapper, plus 8 KB SRAM for saving. The game pushes NES hardware to its limits with vibrant spritework and expressive animations. Contemporary critics were impressed. Nintendo Magazine System UK awarded 93%. Electronic Gaming Monthly gave 8.25/10. Critics noted occasional slowdown and sprite flicker when many objects were on screen. The music by Hirokazu Ando features distinct themes for each world and is praised as some of the finest on the system. Kirby's Adventure remains a celebrated swan song for the NES library.
