Biomotor Unitron

Neo Geo Pocket Color

1999
SNK

Biomotor Unitron is a role-playing game and the first RPG ever released for the Neo Geo Pocket Color. Set in a world where a fallen meteor brought a new energy source, powerful mechs called Unitrons were created. Now used for gladiatorial arena battles, you play as a mysterious pilot aiming to become the legendary "Master of Masters." The gameplay involves exploring four elemental dungeons with random layouts to battle monsters, earn money, and find materials. This loot is used to buy and develop new parts for your Unitron. The deep customization system lets you equip different arms, legs, and bodies, changing stats and visibly altering your robot's appearance with hundreds of combinations. Combat is turn-based, managing Energy Points for special attacks. Outside dungeons, you can participate in arena tournaments to earn cash and increase your rank.

Neo Geo Pocket Color

Released in Japan on April 15, 1999, and in North America on July 31, 1999, Biomotor Unitron was developed by Yumekobo. As the system's first RPG, it filled a crucial genre gap and is now considered a cult classic. The game was praised for deep, addictive mech customization, vibrant sprites, and a catchy soundtrack pushing the handheld's capabilities. However, critics noted its lack of a strong narrative, simplistic combat, and late-game difficulty spikes forcing excessive grinding. Despite flaws, its core loop of building ever more powerful robots earned a dedicated following. The European version was also released in 1999, and its legacy was cemented when included in the Neo Geo Pocket Color Selection Vol. 2 for Nintendo Switch in 2022.
