Death Wish 3

MSX

Death Wish 3 is a side-scrolling urban action game based on the 1985 film starring Charles Bronson. Players control Paul Kersey, a vigilante architect who arrives in a decaying New York City neighborhood to clean up the streets. The game tasks you with eliminating the local gang leader, The Giggler, while navigating a sprawling ten-block area filled with hostile punks. Armed with a signature Wildey .475 Magnum, Kersey can collect additional firepower, including submachine guns and rocket launchers, while managing health by resting at various apartment hideouts. The gameplay blends intense shooting mechanics with exploration and a degree of tactical resource management.

The MSX version, released by Gremlin Graphics in 1987, is a direct port of the ZX Spectrum code, which was a common practice for European MSX releases of the era. This results in a high-contrast, monochrome-heavy aesthetic within the play area to avoid the attribute clash common on Z80-based hardware. While it lacks the colorful backgrounds of the C64 or CPC versions, the MSX port benefits from very sharp, detailed character sprites and a fast, responsive frame rate that keeps the action intense. The game retains the "Police Report" ticker at the bottom of the screen, providing real-time updates on gang activity across the ten blocks. Despite the graphical simplicity, the gameplay remains faithful to the original design, offering a brutal and challenging experience for MSX owners looking for a solid 8-bit conversion of the cinematic vigilante tale.
