Spider-Man

Megadrive

Spider-Man and Venom: Maximum Carnage is a side-scrolling beat 'em up developed by Software Creations and published by Acclaim in 1994, based on the Marvel Comics storyline. The plot follows Cletus Kasady, the psychotic supervillain Carnage, who escapes from Ravencroft Asylum and assembles a "family" of criminals including Shriek, Doppelganger, and Demogoblin to terrorize New York. Forced into an uneasy alliance, Spider-Man and his nemesis Venom join forces to stop Carnage's rampage. Gameplay is presented through digitized panels from the actual comics as cutscenes. The web-slinging mechanic allows immobilizing enemies, creating a shield, and swinging across gaps. Allies like Captain America and Black Cat can be summoned for temporary assistance.

Megadrive

Released in North America and Europe in 1994, this version was famous for its distinctive red cartridge. Critical reception from period magazines was mixed. GamePro commented that while the game controls well, it is overly long and repetitive due to the limited selection of moves, low enemy variety, and backgrounds that all look similar. Electronic Gaming Monthly's reviewers gave it a 5 out of 10, criticizing the "sloppy" graphics and mediocre controls. Some publications noted the brutal difficulty and frustrating enemy placement. The soundtrack, featuring the rock band Green Jellÿ track "Carnage Rules," was a notable highlight. Despite its flaws, Maximum Carnage has gained a cult following and is regarded as one of the better Spider-Man games of the 16-bit era.
