Fatal Fury 2

Megadrive

Fatal Fury 2 is a one-on-one fighting game developed by SNK and published by Takara for the Sega Mega Drive in 1994, based on the 1992 Neo Geo arcade original. The story follows Terry Bogard, Andy Bogard, and Joe Higashi as they return to face new challengers. The roster includes eight playable characters plus four unlockable bosses, introducing series mainstays Kim Kaphwan and Mai Shiranui. Gameplay retains the two-plane battle system, allowing characters to switch between foreground and background lanes. New mechanics include Desperation Moves, powerful special attacks usable only when the life gauge is low.

Released in Japan on June 24, 1994 and in North America the same month, this version features all twelve characters from the arcade original unlockable via codes. Critical reception from period magazines was mixed but generally positive. Reviewers praised the faithful visual recreation with large, well-animated sprites and varied backgrounds. However, common criticisms included compressed audio, occasional missing animation frames, and the three-button controller limitation making special moves less responsive. Using a six-button pad significantly improves the experience. While not reaching Street Fighter II's popularity, Fatal Fury 2 remains a solid and ambitious fighter on the system.
