Animaniacs

Megadrive

Animaniacs is a 2D puzzle-platformer developed and published by Konami in 1994, based on the hit animated series. The Warner siblings—Yakko, Wakko, and Dot—escape the water tower and open a pop culture shop selling movie memorabilia. To do this, they must collect four props from different movie sets: jungle, space, western, and horror stages, playable in any order. You control all three characters, switching between them instantly. Yakko uses a paddleball to stun enemies and push objects. Wakko wields a mallet to hit switches and break items. Dot blows kisses that charm certain characters into triggering actions needed to progress. A final stage against Pinky and the Brain awaits.

Released in North America on May 14, 1994 and in PAL regions the same year. Critical reception from period magazines was mixed. Reviewers praised the vibrant, cartoon-faithful graphics, the clever three-character switching mechanic, and the authentic humor of the show. However, common criticisms included repetitive, box-pushing-heavy gameplay that felt more like a puzzle game than an action-platformer, long levels requiring backtracking, and the absence of voice samples from the beloved cartoon. The Sega version is widely considered superior to its SNES counterpart, offering more coherent level design and better character-swapping implementation. While not a classic, Animaniacs remains a solid, charming licensed title for fans of the show.
