Sonic the Hedgehog is a side-scrolling platform game developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega for the Mega Drive in 1991. The story follows Sonic, a blue hedgehog capable of running at supersonic speeds, as he sets out to defeat Dr. Robotnik, who has imprisoned the animal inhabitants of South Island inside aggressive robots and seeks the powerful Chaos Emeralds. The gameplay involves collecting golden rings as a form of health, a simple control scheme, and levels designed like interactive rollercoasters with springs, slopes, vertical loops, and bottomless pits. The game is split into six principal zones, each with three acts, followed by a short Final Zone.

Master System

Released in North America and Europe in October 1991 and in Japan on December 28, 1991, this version was developed by Ancient and is not a port but an original 8-bit game. The roster includes three familiar zones—Green Hill, Labyrinth, and Scrap Brain—alongside three original zones: Bridge Zone (with collapsing bridges), Jungle Zone (with climbing and log-riding), and Sky Base Zone (set aboard Robotnik's airship). Chaos Emeralds are hidden within each zone's levels rather than in Special Stages. The gameplay is slower and more exploration-focused than the 16-bit original. Contemporary critical reception was highly positive, with reviewers praising the colorful 8-bit visuals, Yuzo Koshiro's energetic rearranged soundtrack, and the creative level design. The game was included in some Master System II consoles sold in Europe as a built-in title. It is now widely considered one of the best titles in the Master System library.
