Galaxy Force II is a space-based rail shooter where you pilot the Try-Z starship against the Fourth Empire's invasion of Junos solar system. Navigate six diverse environments—gardens, fire zones, ice caverns, tunnels—destroying the alien base. Your energy decreases when hit or colliding with obstacles. Armed with an infinite Vulcan cannon and homing missiles, collect energy recharges and power-ups by shooting carrier ships. Master the arcade's legendary "super scaler" technology creating stunning 3D depth through bitmap scaling, featuring Star Wars-inspired visuals and creative enemy formations.
Master System
Released in 1989 by Activision and developed by a Japanese team under Activision's coordination, the Master System version wisely abandoned sprite-scaling technology in favor of complete redesign. Sega reconfigured the game to work with the system's limitations, featuring unlimited continues and increased health compared to the arcade. Most obstacles and enemies were removed, while tunnel stages resort to rolling colors creating a primitive effect. The Master System lacks sprite scaling support like Space Harrier and OutRun, resulting in choppy motion. Due to limited buttons, guns operate on auto-fire by default while remaining buttons control speed and missiles. The soundtrack survives intact, including unused FM sound support coded but never used since the game never released in Japan or South Korea where FM was supported. A pragmatic reimagining that acknowledges hardware limitations rather than forcing an impossible conversion.
