Alex Kidd in Miracle World is a 2D platformer developed and published by Sega, released as a flagship title for the Master System in 1986. Designed to rival Super Mario Bros., it established Alex Kidd as Sega's original mascot before Sonic. Set in the fantasy kingdom of Radaxian, the story follows Alex, a young martial artist who learns that the villain Janken the Great has overthrown the king and kidnapped his son, Prince Egle. Discovering he is the lost prince, Alex sets out to defeat Janken and rescue his brother. Gameplay consists of 17 stages across varied environments, requiring running, jumping, swimming, and punching enemies. A distinctive feature is collecting money to purchase items from shops, including power-ups like a telepathy ball, power bracelet, flight cane, and vehicles such as a motorcycle and speedboat. Boss encounters are played via jan-ken-pon (rock-paper-scissors), where losing means instant death.

Master System

Originally released in Japan on November 1, 1986, followed by North America in December 1986 and Europe in 1987. The game's acclaim led to it being built directly into many Master System consoles, exposing it to a generation of players. Critics praised its vibrant graphics, catchy soundtrack, and immense variety of gameplay. Contemporary magazines awarded it high scores, including 99% from Génération 4. However, the infamous Janken battles and lack of a save system made the game notoriously difficult, requiring players to complete it in a single session. Despite its punishing difficulty and the later decline of the series, Alex Kidd in Miracle World remains one of the finest 8-bit platformers and a beloved classic for Master System enthusiasts.
