Tails Adventure is a platform game that breaks away from the high-speed formula typical of the Sonic series. Developed by Aspect and published by Sega for the Game Gear, it was released in 1995 across Japan, Europe, and North America. The story sees Miles "Tails" Prower on a solo quest to save Cocoa Island from the invading Battle Kukku Army, an army of bird-like warriors seeking the legendary Chaos Emeralds. Instead of fast-paced running, the gameplay is a slower, more methodical platformer with a strong emphasis on exploration, often compared to the Metroidvania genre. Players explore twelve non-linear stages, collecting up to 26 different gadgets that are essential for solving puzzles, accessing new areas, and defeating enemies. Tails can walk, fly for a limited time, and carry only four items into a stage, requiring strategic planning. The game also features health management using Rings and a password system to save progress.

This title stands out for its colorful pixel art and detailed sprites, considered some of the best on the system. The soundtrack is also well-regarded. However, the game received mixed reception. While critics praised its graphics and adventurous spirit, many criticized its slow pace as a departure from the excitement expected of a Sonic game. Retrospective reviews highlight a love-hate relationship: many appreciate its bold, exploratory concept and gadget-driven mechanics, but are frustrated by mandatory backtracking, the restrictive 4-item inventory that can lead to restarting levels, and technical issues like screen crunch and slowdown. Despite these flaws, it has become a sought-after title for collectors and is often regarded as one of the most inventive games in the Game Gear's library.
