Hook

Game Gear

Hook is a side-scrolling action-platformer based on Steven Spielberg's 1991 film starring Robin Williams. You play as Peter Banning, a workaholic corporate lawyer who has forgotten his past as the legendary Peter Pan. When his children are kidnapped by the evil Captain Hook, Peter must return to Neverland, reclaim his lost identity, and rescue them. The game features eight levels set across forests, lagoons, icy mountains, caves, and Hook's pirate ship. Peter wields a dagger as his basic weapon. After defeating the Lost Boy leader Rufio in the first stage, he acquires the Golden Sword, which can shoot energy projectiles. Tinkerbell appears throughout to refill Peter's Fly Meter, allowing short bursts of flight. Collectable apples, cherries, and leaves restore or expand health, represented by a leaf meter starting at two leaves and expandable to four.

Game Gear

Released in North America and Europe in 1993 by Sony Imagesoft, developed by Spidersoft with music composed by Matt Furniss. This version plays similarly to the 16-bit Genesis and Sega CD versions but is shorter, with eight levels instead of eleven, simplified level design, and fewer enemies. Unlike the Sega CD version which features film score adaptation and voice acting, the Game Gear version uses compressed cartridge audio. Peter moves faster and controls more responsively than on the Genesis. The game includes an overworld map between stages. Critics praised the faithful conversion and music but noted the short attack range, blind jumps requiring leaps of faith, and high difficulty with only two hits at default health. A Sega Master System version was planned but never released.
