Alien Syndrome is a run-and-gun shooter originally released by Sega in arcades in 1986. You control one of two soldiers, Ricky and Mary, who must fight their way through large eight-way scrolling levels set aboard seven alien starships. The goal on each level is to rescue a certain number of hostages being held by aliens before a time bomb explodes. Once enough hostages are saved, an exit opens allowing you to fight the end-of-level guardian creature. Defeating this boss advances you to the next ship. The game features two-player simultaneous action. Power-ups include better weapons and maps of the current level to help with navigation.
Game Gear
Released in Japan on March 19, 1992 and in Europe on December 3, 1992, developed by SIMS Co., Ltd. and published by Dempa Micomsoft in Japan . Unlike the Master System port which is a direct conversion, the Game Gear version is considered a "pseudo-sequel/remix" with completely different level layouts, enemy designs, bosses, and visual presentation . Gameplay is single-player only due to hardware limitations. Critics praise the "neat vibe" and "addictive bite-sized gameplay structure," noting the HR Giger-inspired art design effectively conveys the game's dark atmosphere . However, performance issues include inconsistent frame rates, slow game speed, and severe difficulty spikes during boss encounters, where losing your best weapon can make progression nearly impossible . The game can be completed in 15-20 minutes and features a save function.
