Aerial Assault is a horizontally scrolling shoot 'em up developed by Sanritsu and published by Sega for the Master System in 1990, originally under the working title Freedom Fighter. Set in the year 1999, a militaristic organization called the N.A.C. has developed a huge laser emitter named "EL," capable of gradually destroying the ozone layer. The N.A.C. launches an all-out offensive against the world, overwhelming conventional defense forces. The player controls the mysterious "Freedom Fighter," a prototype jet pilot with no official government ties, tasked with destroying five primary targets: the Vinsk battleship, the CB-53 Bomber, two cliff fortresses, and the "EL" laser itself. The game features five missions, each with distinct enemy types and bosses, and includes three difficulty settings. A variety of power-ups are available, including primary weapon upgrades, bombs, speed boosts, and a shield.

Released in 1992 for the Game Gear, this handheld version is significantly different from the Master System original. It features different levels (six stages instead of five), a new opening stage set over a metropolis, and an altered final boss. The weapon system is simplified to a single linear upgrade path, and the ability to use bombs has been removed. A notable addition is a two-player cooperative mode via the link cable. The game received mixed reviews, with critics describing the gameplay as repetitive and lacking intensity, though graphics were noted as decent. Retrospective reviews echo these sentiments, praising the visuals and two-player mode while criticizing the slow pace, overall ease, and the loss of features from the Master System version.
