Raging Fighter

Game Boy

Raging Fighter is a 2D fighting game developed and published by Konami for the Nintendo Game Boy. Known in Japan as Outburst, it was released in March 1993 and stands as one of the few fighting games for the handheld that is not a port of an existing arcade title. Set in a martial arts tournament, players choose from seven playable characters—Tao, Miyabi, Bulk, Aska, Vandal, Ruoh, and Shades—each with their own set of attacks, to battle their way to the championship. Unlike the six-button fighters of the era, the game utilizes only two buttons for punch and kick, with different directional inputs producing a variety of attacks. An in-game meter ranks performance from S to E, while four distinct modes—Practice, Story, Tournament, and Versus—add variety, including a two-player option via the Link Cable.

Released in 1993, Raging Fighter is a notable attempt to bring a satisfying fighting experience to the handheld. The game was praised for its impressive, detailed character sprites and varied backgrounds, considered a technical achievement for the system. However, critical reception was mixed, with many reviewers pointing out severe flaws in the gameplay. The controls were widely criticized for being sluggish and unresponsive, with the game suffering from noticeable slowdown and a lack of move interruption. The Story Mode was also seen as a misnomer, offering little narrative and simply serving as an endurance match where health carries over between fights, while the final boss is a lazy mirror match against the player's own character. Despite its aesthetic merits and the novelty of being a non-port original, Raging Fighter is often remembered as a clunky and frustrating title that failed to overcome hardware limitations for a fast-paced genre.
