Game Boy

StarHawk is a side-scrolling shoot 'em up developed by NMS Software and published by Accolade for the Game Boy in 1993 . The game casts you as a pilot aboard the scout ship StarHawk, sent to explore the Evil Empire of Axtar. There, you face hordes of mutant enemies—half organic, half technological—that attack relentlessly . Across five levels, you must fight through waves of alien beasties, including grotesque eyeballs and buzzsaw-like energy disks, before confronting huge end-level bosses that require a strategy to defeat piece by piece . The ship can be upgraded with various power-ups that alter its form and weapons . The game features detailed sprites and even some parallax scrolling in certain stages, which was notable for the handheld .

Reviewers praised its impressive graphics for the system, with detailed sprites and nice parallax backgrounds on some levels . However, many criticized the gameplay for being frustrating and flawed . A major complaint is that even small enemies take multiple hits to destroy, encouraging avoidance rather than combat . Power-ups are also considered infrequent and underwhelming . The boss fights are particularly criticized for their rigid structure, requiring players to destroy specific parts in a set order while the rest remain invincible . The music and sound effects are also described as dreary and janky . Despite being relatively short, the game gained a cult following among collectors due to its rarity.
