Wizardry Gaiden II: Curse of the Ancient Emperor is a dungeon-crawling RPG and the second entry in the Wizardry Gaiden trilogy developed exclusively for the Game Boy. The story unfolds in Almar, a fortress city serving as a crossroads between east and west. After a typhoon reveals ancient ruins nearby, Lord Udin orders an excavation, unleashing a terrible curse upon the city. A metal plate found at the site warns of the sleeping Emperor Halgith, an evil magician who consorted with darkness. As the curse spreads, Lord Udin's daughter Manaya loses her sight, hearing, and speech. Determined to stop the curse, Udin calls for adventurers to venture into the labyrinth and subdue the ancient emperor. Players create a party and navigate the ten-floor dungeon in a first-person perspective, battling monsters and managing resources.

Released exclusively in Japan on December 26, 1992, by ASCII Corporation, this installment was developed by the same team behind the first Wizardry Gaiden. It refines the formula with a more balanced difficulty and greater variety of equipment, including powerful elemental weapons. The game is also known for its "Mania Mode," a harder difficulty where saving within the labyrinth is disabled. Despite improvements, many graphics, including enemy sprites and dungeon screens, were reused from the previous title due to budget constraints. The game is notorious for its punishing difficulty, with even early enemies capable of killing party members in a single hit. It was never released outside Japan, and playing without Japanese knowledge is extremely challenging, though fan translations exist. Wizardry Gaiden II remains a highly regarded dungeon-crawler for fans of classic, uncompromising RPGs.
