Popeye 2 is a 2D platform game that follows the spinach-powered sailor on a quest to rescue his friends from the clutches of Bluto. After the first Game Boy title, the story sees Popeye travel through exotic locations to save Swee'Pea, Wimpy, and Olive Oyl. The gameplay is a side-scrolling action platformer. Popeye can walk, jump, climb, and punch his way through levels, with his primary attack being a powerful punch that can also destroy bricks to reveal helpful items. Spinach cans serve as a health and power system: collecting them increases Popeye's health, visually indicated by the size of his forearm. At maximum capacity, he gains a powerful ranged attack where he throws spinach cans. Each of the four worlds culminates in a boss fight.

Released in Japan on November 22, 1991, by Sigma Enterprises, Popeye 2 was later published in North America (October 1993) and Europe (1994) by Activision. Developed by Copya System, the game was directed by Tomo Chan, with music by Akihiko Mori and Yuji Iwasaki. For its Western release, the game was adapted for a broader audience and is considered a significant improvement over its predecessor, featuring traditional platforming and removing the maze elements of the original. While criticized for its short length and simple difficulty—often completable in under an hour—it is praised for its tight, responsive controls and engaging gameplay. Critics have also noted the catchy music and well-done graphics, and it remains a cherished title for its straightforward, addictive platforming.
