The Rescue of Princess Blobette

Game Boy

The Rescue of Princess Blobette is a puzzle-platformer for the Game Boy and the sequel to the NES classic A Boy and His Blob: Trouble on Blobolonia. You control a young boy and his alien blob companion on a quest to rescue the blob's girlfriend, Princess Blobette, who has been imprisoned by the antagonistic Alchemist in the highest tower of the Royal Castle on the planet Blobolonia. The boy cannot jump or swim and will die if he falls a long distance or touches hazards, but the blob can be fed a variety of jelly beans to transform it into useful objects like a trampoline to reach high places, a ladder to climb, or a monkey wrench to stop machinery. Finding five peppermints increases your extra lives, and 19 optional treasures are scattered throughout the castle.

Game Boy

Released in Japan on November 9, 1990, and in North America in May 1991, this title was developed by Imagineering and designed by David Crane, who also created the original NES game. While the unique puzzle mechanics earned praise for their originality and the game received positive scores from Computer and Video Games and Nintendo Power, it is also well-known for its frustrating controls and awkward blob AI, which often pushes the boy to his death. The game uses the same limited soundtrack as its predecessor, lacks a save feature, and is considered quite short for experienced players. Despite these flaws, it is regarded as a cult classic with a dedicated following, appreciated for its quirky concept and satisfying "aha!" puzzle moments.
