The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap is an action-adventure and the twelfth Zelda entry, serving as a prequel to Four Swords and telling the origins of the titular sword and villain Vaati. During Hyrule's annual Picori Festival, the sorcerer Vaati shatters the sacred Picori Blade and turns Princess Zelda to stone in his search for the legendary Light Force. Link is tasked with finding the Minish to reforge the sword. He befriends Ezlo, a magical talking cap who grants him the power to shrink to the Minish size. The game retains the classic top-down Zelda formula with dungeon exploration and boss battles, while introducing fresh mechanics: shrinking to explore a parallel tiny world, the Kinstone fusion system unlocking secrets, and splitting into multiple Links with the Four Sword. New items include the Gust Jar, Mole Mitts, and Cane of Pacci.
Game Boy Advance
Released in November 2004, The Minish Cap was developed by Capcom and Flagship, with Keiji Inafune producing. The game features a vibrant, cartoonish art style inspired by The Wind Waker, with detailed sprite work and impressive effects like multi-tiered scrolling and sunbeams, pushing the GBA's capabilities. The soundtrack by Mitsuhiko Takano was highly commended. The game earned critical acclaim, with a Metascore of 89, and was named Game Boy Advance Game of the Year 2005 by GameSpot. It sold over 1.76 million copies worldwide. Critics praised the fresh shrinking mechanic, clever dungeon design, and faithful Zelda formula, though some noted the short length of around ten hours and the kinstone system's repetitiveness. It is celebrated as one of the finest 2D Zelda adventures and a must-own title for the GBA.
