Fire Emblem

Game Boy Advance

Fire Emblem is a tactical role-playing game and the seventh installment in the series, serving as a prequel to Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade and set 20 years earlier on the continent of Elibe. The story begins with Lyn, a young warrior from the Sacae Plains, who discovers she is heir to the throne of Caelin and must defend her birthright. One year later, the narrative shifts to Eliwood, son of the Marquess of Pherae, who sets out to find his missing father with his friend Hector, uncovering a sinister conspiracy by the dark sorcerer Nergal and his assassins, the Black Fang. Gameplay follows the classic formula: command units on grid-based maps with turn-based combat, each belonging to a class that determines abilities and weapons. A defining feature is permanent death: characters defeated are lost forever. The game introduces the weapon triangle and support conversations, placing the player as a customizable tactician.

Released in April 2003, this was the first Fire Emblem game localized for Western audiences. Developed by Intelligent Systems, it was crafted with international players in mind, featuring an extended tutorial in Lyn's story to ease newcomers. The game earned a Metascore of 88, with critics praising its deep tactical gameplay, memorable characters, engaging narrative, and stunning pixel art that pushed the GBA's capabilities. It was a commercial success, selling over 970,000 copies worldwide and establishing the series in the West. The game offers additional modes including a Battle Arena and multiplayer Link Arena. Some critics noted its demanding difficulty, but it remains one of the most beloved entries in the franchise, celebrated as a masterpiece on the Game Boy Advance.
