Metroid Fusion

Game Boy Advance

Metroid Fusion is an action-adventure game and the fourth mainline entry in the Metroid series. The story begins when Samus accompanies a research team to planet SR-388, where she is attacked by the X Parasite, which infects her central nervous system. Near death, Samus is saved by a vaccine created from the DNA of the last Metroid—the X Parasite's only natural predator—but this leaves her weakened and vulnerable to cold. The game is set aboard the Biologic Space Laboratories research station, where the X Parasites have broken containment. Samus must navigate seven sectors, recover her abilities, and eliminate the X threat while being hunted by the SA-X, a terrifying doppelganger with her full arsenal.

Released in November 2002, Metroid Fusion was developed by Nintendo R&D1, with Yoshio Sakamoto directing. It is a technical showcase, featuring detailed sprite work, impressive lighting effects, and fluid animations. The soundtrack creates a tense, atmospheric mood. Unlike previous Metroid games, Fusion adopts a more linear, mission-based structure, with Samus guided by her ship's computer, Adam. This departure was controversial, but the game compensates with a stronger narrative and refined controls. It earned a Metascore of 89 and won "Handheld Game of the Year" from the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences. It offers replay value through hidden items and unlockable artwork. Completing the game unlocks an emulated version of the original NES Metroid. Fusion is celebrated as one of the finest games on the GBA.
