Resident Evil - Code: Veronica X

Dreamcast

Resident Evil - Code: Veronica X is a survival horror game and a direct sequel to Resident Evil 2. Developed and published by Capcom, it was released for the Sega Dreamcast in 2001 as an enhanced version of the original Code: Veronica. The story follows Claire Redfield, who, while searching for her missing brother Chris, is captured and taken to a remote prison island controlled by the Umbrella Corporation. A sudden virus outbreak provides her with a chance to escape, but she becomes entangled in the sinister plans of the Ashford family. The game introduces the new T-Veronica virus and features the return of Albert Wesker. Gameplay retains the classic Resident Evil formula of fixed camera angles, resource management, and puzzle-solving, but shifts to fully 3D polygonal environments instead of pre-rendered backgrounds.

Dreamcast

The Dreamcast version is historically significant as the first mainline Resident Evil game to feature fully 3D environments. It is praised for impressive graphics with detailed character models and atmospheric lighting, often considered superior to the later PlayStation 2 port in visual clarity. The game is presented across two GD-ROMs and noted for its epic scope, with a lengthy campaign substantially bigger than previous entries. Contemporary reviews lauded its technical achievements and gripping storyline, hailing it as one of the best-looking games on the platform. However, critics noted the controls felt dated and cumbersome. Released shortly before Capcom announced the Dreamcast's discontinuation, it became a swan song for the console's support. Despite this, Resident Evil - Code: Veronica X on Dreamcast remains a must-have title, celebrated as a high point for the survival horror series.
