Star Wars: Episode I - Racer

Dreamcast

Star Wars Episode I: Racer is a sci-fi racing game developed and published by LucasArts, based on the thrilling podracing sequence from Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. Players take control of young Anakin Skywalker or one of over 20 other alien racers from the film, including the villainous Sebulba. The goal is to compete across 21 tracks on 8 unique worlds, navigating treacherous environments filled with methane lakes and meteor showers. Gameplay emphasizes breakneck speed—podracers max out at 600 mph—balanced against a damage system where engines can overheat and crash.

Dreamcast

Released in North America on April 4, 2000, this version features a smoother framerate than the N64 version, running at a solid 30 frames per second. A major audio improvement is that John Williams' film score now plays throughout the entire length of each race, rather than only during the final lap, and voices are now clearly identifiable. However, textures remain plain, polygon counts are roughly the same as the N64 version, and load times are longer than expected. Critics concluded that while the core gameplay remains fun with tight controls, the Dreamcast version feels less like a proper Dreamcast game and more like "a really nice N64 version" that fails to leverage the console's power. For those who have never experienced the game, this is the version to get—but for N64 owners, the improvements are not worth a second purchase.
