Carmageddon

DOS

Carmageddon is a vehicular combat racing game developed by Stainless Games and published by SCi Games, released for DOS in 1997. You play as Max Damage, a deranged driver competing in a brutal no-holds-barred race where the objective is not simply to finish first. A level can be completed in one of three ways: completing all laps, destroying all opponent vehicles, or killing every pedestrian in the area. The game features realistic physics for its time, groundbreaking car deformation, and a sandbox 3D environment. The time limit can be extended by passing checkpoints, collecting power-ups, damaging opponents, and running over pedestrians, with style bonuses awarded for spectacular kills. Up to six players can compete via network multiplayer. The American release's tagline was "The racing game for the chemically imbalanced."

DOS

Released on June 20, 1997 for DOS and Windows 95, Carmageddon runs on the BRender engine and requires a 75 MHz CPU, 8 MB of RAM, 20 MB of hard drive space, and a 4x CD-ROM drive. The game became infamous for its graphic violence, facing censorship in multiple countries. In the UK and Germany, pedestrians were replaced by zombies with green blood (or robots with black oil in Germany) to pass ratings boards. Stainless Games released official "Blood Pack" patches that restored the human pedestrians and red blood. An expansion pack, the Splat Pack, was released on November 14, 1997, adding eight new environments including a medieval tourist attraction, a prison, and a final level set in Hell, plus new cars and power-ups. The Splat Pack was the first in the series to natively support 3D acceleration via the Glide API for 3Dfx Voodoo cards. A compilation titled Carmageddon Max Pack followed in March 1998.
