Dragon Lore II is a first-person fantasy adventure-RPG hybrid and the sequel to Dragon Lore. Developed by Cryo Interactive, you return as Werner von Wallenrod, a young knight of the Order of the Dragon Knights. After proving his lineage in the first game, Werner faces a new challenge: the ancestral guardian dragon of his family, the ancient fire-drake Maraach, has mysteriously vanished. To claim his inheritance, Werner journeys across Draconia. The narrative unfolds through dialogue with over 60 fully rendered 3D NPCs. Gameplay moves beyond point-and-click to incorporate real-time combat, character statistics, and inventory management. A key feature is the dynamic day-and-night cycle, which alters NPC behavior and location availability.
DOS
Released for MS-DOS in 1996 by Cryo Interactive, Dragon Lore II required a 486DX2 66 MHz processor and SVGA graphics to run its pre-rendered 3D environments. As a CD-ROM title, it utilized Red Book audio for its orchestral soundtrack and featured full voice-acting for its cast. The DOS version is famous for its ambitious interface: a context-sensitive cursor that changes function to interact with pixel-perfect environments. A notorious technical limitation forced players to physically swap between two CDs to transition between day and night states, risking crashes and hardware wear. Praised for artistic direction but criticized for non-intuitive controls and punishing combat, it remains Cryo's ambitious last hurrah for DOS.
