Superfrog is a cartoon-style side-scrolling platformer starring a prince turned into a frog by an evil witch. After drinking a magic potion, he becomes Superfrog, a caped hero with superpowers who sets out to defeat the witch. Across 24 levels divided into six themed worlds, you run, jump and stomp on enemies such as bees, hedgehogs and snails, collecting a set number of coins to open the exit. Every level has a strict time limit, and power-ups give you wings to glide through the air or a spud gun to fire at enemies. Smooth scrolling, colorful visuals and upbeat music, along with a Sonic-like feel, made it a popular mascot platformer of the early 1990s.
DOS
Released in 1994, a year after the Amiga original, this DOS version was ported by Bubball Systems, with Team17 credited as publisher. The port lacks the animated intro and the shooting mini-game of the Amiga version, but adds a gambling feature after the final level, with a level code as a prize. It was distributed on two 3.5-inch floppy disks, installs to the hard drive and runs in 320x240 resolution. Its crisp graphics and scrolling stand out for a DOS platformer of the time. Compared with the Amiga original, it was met with a lukewarm reception, with one magazine scoring it just 40 out of 100. Still, it remains an enjoyable and challenging run-and-jump platformer, and the DOS version was re-released in 2012 as a download that works on modern Windows systems. A high-definition remake, Superfrog HD, later appeared, co-developed by Team17 and TickTockGames, the former Bubball Systems.
