Epic is a science fiction space combat game developed by Digital Image Design and designed by Martin Kenwright. Heavily inspired by Battlestar Galactica, it tells of mankind’s desperate evacuation across the territories of the evil Rexxons. You pilot an advanced fighter, taking on missions set both in deep space and on planetary surfaces, a novelty for the genre at the time. The action is viewed in 3D from the cockpit, with polygon graphics and the option of several external camera views. Animated cutscenes help tell the story between missions. Often compared to Wing Commander, it was one of the most anticipated space shooters of its time. Originally released in 1992.

DOS

Published by Ocean in 1992 and distributed on floppy disks, this PC conversion mixes uniformly colored polygons with bitmap graphics for its ships, planets and cutscenes. The soundtrack is credited to Øisten Eide, with sound effects by David Whittaker. The game is best played with the mouse, which makes aiming and maneuvering far more natural than the keyboard. Flight is limited in pitch, so the action feels closer to a fast arcade shooter than to a full space simulator. A technical warning: on faster PCs the game runs too quickly and needs a slow-down utility, which today can be handled by adjusting the CPU cycles in DOSBox. The cockpit view and cutscenes remain central to the experience, giving the conversion a cinematic feel. Ideal for players who enjoy fast, story-driven space combat with a strong retro flavor.
