Quest for Glory: So You Want to Be a Hero is a genre-defining hybrid of adventure and role-playing, designed by Lori Ann Cole and published by Sierra On-Line in October 1989. Originally titled Hero's Quest, the name was changed due to a trademark conflict with Milton Bradley's HeroQuest board game. You play a recent graduate of the Famous Adventurer's Correspondence School who arrives in the cursed valley of Spielburg. The evil ogress Baba Yaga has plagued the land, the baron's daughter has vanished, and his son has been transformed into a bear. You choose from three character classes—Fighter, Magic User, or Thief—each offering unique solutions to puzzles and quests. Skills improve through repeated use: climbing trees builds Climbing, casting spells raises Magic, and cleaning stables increases Strength. The game features a day/night cycle, hunger and fatigue systems, and an open-ended structure allowing quests in any order.
DOS
Released in October 1989 for MS-DOS, this original version runs on Sierra's SCI engine with 16-color EGA graphics. The game requires an Intel 286 CPU with 640KB RAM and supports keyboard, mouse, or analog joystick input. Music was composed by Mark Seibert, with audio support for PC Speaker, AdLib, Roland MT-32, and Sound Blaster. The game shipped on multiple 3.5-inch floppy disks. The box famously advertised "three games in one" due to the three distinct class paths. The original EGA release was followed by a 1992 VGA remake with point-and-click controls, but the 1989 DOS version remains beloved for its charming pixel art and challenging parser-based gameplay. The valley of Spielburg features memorable locations including the hero's guild, Erana's Peace, and Baba Yaga's hut, establishing recurring elements for the entire five-game series.
