Starglider 2 is a 3D first-person space combat simulator and sequel to the 1986 original. Two years after the defeat of Commander Herman Kruud and the Egron fleet, the enemy returns with a new threat: a giant beam projector aimed at the planet Novenia, being assembled on the Egron world of Apogee. The player must infiltrate the system unarmed, acquire weapons and components by exploring multiple planets and trading with their inhabitants, then assemble a neutron bomb and destroy the station before it becomes operational. Gameplay blends arcade dogfighting with open-world exploration and resource management, moving freely between planets and flying through underground tunnels where most weapons are hidden. The original Starglider was a landmark 3D vector shooter; its sequel expanded the scope dramatically to a full solar system with filled-polygon graphics on 16-bit platforms.
DOS
Released in 1989, the DOS version was published by Rainbird in Europe and by Microplay Software — MicroProse's North American distribution label — in the United States and Canada, where it was sold on 5¼-inch floppy disk. Developed by Argonaut Software under the direction of Jez San, it delivered the same open-world space combat experience of the 16-bit originals to IBM PC compatibles. Computer Gaming World praised it as a vast improvement over its predecessor, noting it had no real weak points, with only minor criticism directed at joystick controls compared to mouse input. A remarkable achievement in bringing a seamless, loadscreen-free solar system to PC hardware of the era.
