Green Beret is a high-octane side-scrolling action game where you control a lone special forces soldier infiltrating a heavily guarded enemy complex. Armed initially with only a combat knife, you must traverse four perilous stages—the Missile Base, the Harbour, the Bridge, and the Prison Camp—to rescue captured P.O.W.s. The gameplay is famously intense, requiring quick reflexes to stab oncoming soldiers, jump over obstacles, and duck under enemy fire. While your primary weapon is melee-based, you can secure limited-use secondary weapons like flamethrowers, rocket launchers, and grenades by defeating specific enemy commanders, providing a brief but essential tactical advantage against the overwhelming enemy forces.

The PC DOS version, released in 1986, is a faithful translation of the arcade's punishing mechanics to the home computer. Supporting CGA and EGA graphics, it provides a clear, albeit color-limited, view of the battlefield that ensures the fast-moving enemies are always visible. The gameplay speed is remarkably high on standard 8088 machines, retaining the frantic "stab or be stabbed" rhythm of the original. Sound is delivered through the internal PC speaker, providing basic yet functional audio cues for combat and item pickups. While it lacks the advanced scrolling of 8-bit consoles, the precise keyboard controls make navigating the multi-tiered platforms and avoiding landmines feel rewarding. It stands as a solid example of early PC action gaming, successfully porting the intense atmosphere of Konami's classic to the office-centric hardware of the time.
