Legacy of the Ancients is a role-playing game developed by Quest Software (twin brothers Charles and John Dougherty) and published by Electronic Arts in 1987. You play as a young shepherd who loots a dying man's possessions—a black disk, a golden bracelet, and a leather scroll called the Wizard's Compendium. The Galactic Museum mysteriously appears, revealing that you have become the next adventurer tasked with destroying the evil Compendium. The game does not use an experience point system; you gain levels only by completing quests. The world of Tarmalon features 12 towns, 24 dungeons and castles, over 30 monster types, and six magic spells. The game switches between top-down view for the overworld and towns, and first-person 3D for dungeons and the museum.
DOS
Released in 1989 for MS-DOS, published by Electronic Arts . This version runs on standard PC hardware of the era, utilizing CGA graphics with an 8-color palette . Unlike the Commodore 64 version's 16-color graphics and 3-voice SID music, the DOS port features simpler visuals and basic PC speaker sound effects, which contemporary players noted as inferior to the C64 original . The game retains the same dual-perspective system: top-down for overworld exploration and first-person 3D for dungeons and the museum. The access code wheel is required to re-enter the museum, matching planet names, gem names, and ring numbers. Players can store up to eight characters on a single disk . The DOS version has an average critic score of 68% based on 7 reviews .
