Budokan - The Martial Spirit

DOS

Budokan: The Martial Spirit is a realistic martial arts simulation set at the Nippon Budokan in Tokyo. As a student of the fictional Tobiko Ryu school, you must master four disciplines: Karate (unarmed), Kendo (bamboo sword), Nunchaku, and Bo (wooden staff). After training in the dojo, you enter a tournament against 12 opponents who wield styles like Tonfa, Yari (spear), Naginata, and Kusari-gama (chain-sickle). The combat system features over 25 moves per style, stamina management, and Ki energy — build Ki by avoiding attacks to unleash devastating blows. A sensei analyzes your performance after each bout. Two-player mode is available.

DOS

Released in 1989 by Electronic Arts for MS-DOS, this was the original version alongside the Amiga . The DOS version was critically acclaimed as superior to the Commodore 64 and Amiga ports — a rare case where the PC version is considered the definitive edition . It supports VGA graphics at 320x200 resolution with detailed, colorful sprites and smooth animations. Sound relies on PC speaker or Adlib/Sound Blaster for enhanced music. Controls use keyboard; 29 moves available for the Bo alone, with complex key combinations required for special attacks . The game features a two-player mode and was one of EA's most successful fighting games for PC. Requires 640KB RAM. A deeply strategic, simulation-focused fighter that rewards patience over button-mashing.
