Heavy Metal - DOS game screenshot (1989) by Access

Heavy Metal is a military action simulation that puts you in command of three powerful combat vehicles. You must devise a strategy to defeat enemy land and air forces in intense confrontation. The game features three distinct campaigns: MBT (Main Battle Tank) with the M1A1 Abrams viewed from a first-person cockpit perspective; FAV (Fast Attack Vehicle) with an armed XR311 dune buggy viewed from behind your vehicle; and ADAT (Air Defence Anti-Tank) where you operate a stationary rocket launcher against incoming aircraft. Complete missions to earn the rank of Tactical Commander and access a strategic map to plan your next move.

DOS

Released in 1989 in North America and 1990 in Europe, published by Access Software . Developed by Bruce and Roger Carver with Brent Erickson. The DOS version requires Tandy, EGA, VGA, or Hercules graphics support . Features all three gameplay modes: first-person tank combat with full instrumentation including radar, compass, and laser rangefinder; third-person desert buggy racing-shooter; and stationary anti-aircraft defense . A Tactical Command Center (TACC) mode allows strategic deployment of four unit groups on an overhead map; when enemy contact occurs, combat resolves either through direct player control or computer calculation . Reaching 5000 points in all three sequences unlocks the tactical campaign mode. The DOS port supports keyboard control with no mouse support. Some editions include a free copy of Beach Head .
