Mechanicus

Commodore 64

Mechanicus is a groundbreaking pinball simulation for the Commodore 64 that broke the mold of traditional single-table games. Instead of one playfield, it introduced three distinct themed tables: futuristic, botanical, and dungeon-style. Developed by Hightech Studio Designs, with programming by Andrew Miller and music by Markus Müller, the game was released in 1991 by CP Verlag as a covermount on their Game On! magazine disk. Players choose their starting table, aiming to score points, earn extra balls, and unlock exits to advance. Up to four players can compete in turns. Beyond its innovative structure, Mechanicus was praised for detailed 2D graphics, a rock-inspired soundtrack, and realistic ball physics. Each table features unique bumpers, ramps, and targets, with a complex scoring system and timer-based bonuses adding strategic depth rarely seen in arcade pinball titles.

Commodore 64

This version is regarded as one of the finest pinball games ever for the system. Its three single-screen tables were state-of-the-art and highly innovative. The rock soundtrack by Markus Müller pushes the SID chip with distorted guitars and heavy drums, giving the game an energetic atmosphere. Vibrant, detailed graphics create immersive environments, from a skull-adorned futuristic playfield to a natural floral setting. Ball physics were acclaimed for precision and smooth movement. The deep ruleset includes a timer-based "special ball" system, bonuses for activating "Extra Shield" and "Ball Stopper" features, and shared progression to the next table once one player reaches the required score. Mechanicus remains a cult classic on the C64.
