Star Control is a science-fiction wargame developed by Toys for Bob and published by Accolade in 1991 . The game pits the forces of the Alliance of Free Stars against those of the predatory Ur-Quan Hierarchy . The Alliance and Hierarchy each possess different types of warships, each with its own maneuvering and firing characteristics, plus a unique special power . The game features two modules: Melee, a one-on-one space dogfight using any of 16 different ships; and the Full Game, which lets you play one of nine preset strategic scenarios involving fleet management, planetary exploration, and resource gathering on a star map . Combat is inspired by Spacewar!, with wraparound screens, gravity effects from planets, and asteroids that can be used as cover or hazards .
