Mean Streets

Commodore 64

Mean Streets is a graphic adventure game developed by Access Software and published in Europe by U.S. Gold. It is the first entry in the Tex Murphy series, set in a dystopian cyberpunk neo-noir version of San Francisco in the year 2033. You play as Tex Murphy, a down-on-his-luck private investigator hired by a woman named Sylvia Linsky to investigate the death of her father, Dr. Carl Linsky, a university professor who apparently jumped off the Golden Gate Bridge. The gameplay combines first-person flying sections in a hover vehicle called a "speeder", interrogation sequences where you must type questions, and side-scrolling shooter sections when entering dangerous areas. The game bills itself as an "interactive movie" featuring digitised photographs of actors.

Commodore 64

The Commodore 64 version was released in North America in October 1989 and in Europe in November 1990, converted by The Code Monkeys . It is the only Tex Murphy title ever released for the C64 . This port preserves all core gameplay features: the speeder navigation system, text-driven interrogations, and side-scrolling shooter sequences . The digitised character portraits and backgrounds are present, though technical limitations result in reduced graphical quality compared to the DOS original . Contemporary reviews in 64'er magazine rated the graphics 7/10 but sound only 4/10, with an overall score of 6/10 . User reviews praise the game's atmosphere, complexity, and innovative features like the communication system, with one calling it "the best adventure for the C64" . Despite being technically weaker than other conversions, it delivers the same engaging film-noir experience .
