Netherworld

Commodore 64

Netherworld is a unique multi-directional shooter that blends frantic action with environmental puzzles. Controlling a small craft, you are trapped in a series of bizarre, organic dimensions where you must collect a specific quota of diamonds to open the exit portal. The challenge lies in the shifting nature of the terrain: certain blocks can be shot to create paths, while others expand or collapse, potentially crushing your ship or blocking your progress. To survive, you must manage limited fuel and time while dodging or destroying hostile alien entities. It is a game of both reflexes and foresight, as players must navigate treacherous, claustrophobic corridors where every shot can fundamentally alter the level's layout.

Commodore 64

Released in 1988 by Hewson and developed by Jeroen Tel, Netherworld is a technical tour de force for the C64. It features incredibly smooth 8-way scrolling and highly detailed, surreal landscapes that push the machine's color palette to its limits. The game is legendary for its soundtrack, composed by Tel himself, which features complex, driving SID rhythms that are considered among the best on the platform. The physics-based movement of the ship and the interactive environment provided a level of depth that was highly praised by critics, with Zzap!64 awarding it a "Sizzler." Its mix of puzzle-solving and shooting, combined with an atmospheric aesthetic, makes it one of the most distinctive and technically polished titles in the late-80s C64 library.
