Eliminator

Commodore 64

Eliminator is a high-speed, futuristic combat racer that draws heavy inspiration from arcade classics like S.T.U.N. Runner. Players pilot a sleek, low-slung craft along a multi-lane highway suspended in space, filled with lethal obstacles, ramps, and aggressive enemy vehicles. The objective is to reach the end of each stage before the timer expires, using your forward-mounted cannons to blast through opposition. Strategic use of the environment is key, as hitting speed boosters and navigating jump ramps allows you to bypass hazards or fly over lower-level threats. The game demands lightning-fast reflexes and precise steering to maintain momentum while dodging indestructible barriers and bottomless pits.

Commodore 64

Released in 1988 and developed by P.D. Mundy, the C64 version of Eliminator is a masterclass in pseudo-3D sprite scaling. It achieves an incredible sense of speed through smooth, rapid scaling of road objects and enemy ships, creating a convincing 3D perspective that was rare for 8-bit hardware. The graphics are sharp and vibrant, featuring a clean road design that minimizes visual clutter during high-speed segments. A major highlight is the pulsating SID soundtrack composed by Jeroen Tel, which provides a high-energy, driving beat that perfectly complements the frantic pace of the race. Critically acclaimed, it received a "Sizzler" award from Zzap!64 for its technical brilliance and addictive, "just one more go" gameplay. It remains one of the most impressive racing-shooters on the platform, praised for its fluidity and the sheer adrenaline it delivers.
